Early original produced around 2001 in Cakewalk, featuring text-to-speech vocal processing and basslines from the Future Retro 777 synthesizer. The FR-777 bassline can be heard prominently at the end of the track — at the time, the unit had just been released and I was on the waiting list for original units. I paid $777 for it, which was the original retail price.
The track was played live at least once at Inertia Nightclub (Banana Joe's) in Minneapolis, and the prospect of performing it live was part of the motivation for creating it in the first place.
The 777 also made one appearance in the real world — it was in my backpack the day I tripped crossing Nicollet Avenue grabbing flyers for the BT show at The Quest, and got a small ding on the corner when my bag hit the ground. Eventually I traded it straight-up for a Korg Z1 to someone I connected with online — a synth forum or trade site, I can't remember exactly. I only remember who he was because he emailed me from his work address at The Motley Fool.
In 2025 Future Retro launched a Kickstarter to reissue the 777. The original Kickstarter units at $777 sold out — remaining retail preorders are $888.
